On August 8th, 2022, we gathered at 2228 Blake St to begin our long, arduous journey into the world of Software Engineering. In just 2 humbling days, the journey has already proven to be a monumental challenge. This blog will detail the highs and lows of the next 15 weeks as we immerse ourselves into the world of JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
Sitting here today and writing this out, my head is already swimming with the breadth of topics discussed thus far. We dove headfirst into functions on our first day and covered DOM manipulation today. With every line of code I struggle to write, my respect for the programmers of even the most basic website increases. The knowledge necessary for creating a functional front-end while delivering an elegant UI seems like an impossible task, and yet it seems there is no end for high-quality software engineering in the world today. As I stand at the precipice of this field, I wonder if I am capable of achieving something so magnificent as a Facebook, a Twitter, or even a…I don’t know…eBay? I feel surrounded by greatness and lost in translation.
However, as the various mentors have assured, this feeling of humility is common. Even programmers with many years of experience feel similarly. And so as the days go by, I will gaze at the pit of despair and I will journey through it. After all is said and done, I will emerge with a newfound sense of achievement and I will be a significant step closer to mastering the art and language of software.
In this moment, I am excited and nervous. I will continue to type away. I will continue to err and to become frustrated. But, I won’t let it stop me.
